Human Biological Resource Center

Human Biological Resource Center

Human Biological Resource Center (Kaunas Biobank) is a joint scientific infrastructure developed by the Hospital of Lithuanian University of Health Sciences Kauno klinikos and the Lithuanian University of Health Sciences. It serves as a Human Biological Resource Center, uniting researchers and clinicians to support biomedical research and innovation.

The biobank provides access to high-quality, standardized human biological samples (including tissues, blood, cells, and other fluids) and related clinical data. Its goal is to support both national and international researchers in advancing the understanding of diseases, and improving diagnostics and treatment strategies.

Samples are collected from routine medical procedures with patient consent or as residual material that would otherwise be discarded. All data and materials are handled in accordance with ethical and legal standards to ensure participant confidentiality and data protection.

Kaunas Biobank operates under the governance of its Scientific Board and is coordinated by the Department of Pathological Anatomy. It is funded by Kauno klinikos, the Lithuanian University of Health Sciences, as well as grants and service-based income.

Since 2023, Kaunas Biobank is a full member of BBMRI-ERIC, the European research infrastructure consortium for biobanks. This membership strengthens international collaboration, provides access to shared biorepositories across Europe, and supports high standards in quality, ethics, and interoperability.
