Department of Dental and Oral Pathology provides services of primary dental care as well as specialized services in diagnosis and treatment of endodontic and periodontal pathology.

The primary dental care is offered to all patients registered at the Family Medicine Department of the Hospital of the LUHS Kauno klinikos as well as to other patients who apply for it. The specialized endodontic and periodontal treatment is provided to the patients referred to Dental and Oral Pathology Department by their dentists from all parts of Lithuania.

The primary dental care services comprise different clinical procedures such as diagnosis and treatment of dental caries, tooth sensitivity, direct restoration of hard dental tissue defects, non-complicated cases of endodontic and periodontal pathology, etc.

Patients who require more specialized care are referred to specialists for a thorough assessment of the patient’s oral health status and consequently, provided with the necessary treatment procedures such as retreatment of complicated endodontic cases, or periodontal surgery. The treatment procedures are carried out using modern techniques and equipment such as dental microscope, ultrasonic devices, rotary instruments for cleaning and shaping the root canals and other. The diagnosis of oral mucosa pathology is aided with supplementary histopathological, microbiological tests if necessary.

The medical staff of the Department is involved in the academic and research activities at LUHS in parallel to the clinical work. The purpose of the programmes is to train the participants to become competent specialists in their field. This demands a thorough understanding of general biological principles and function, as well as comprehension of the science. Technical skills are trained during treatment of a great variety of the patients attending the Department. Critical evidence-based thinking is exercised during study and evaluation of textbooks and scientific articles related to the subject. Furthermore, there is a number of different courses available for continuing education of dental practitioners at the Department as well.
